WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — HCA Healthcare confirmed a trove of their patient information has been stolen and an estimated 11 million patients may have been affected by the hack.
The WPEC I-Team reported the hacker is threatening to sell the Protected Health Information (PHI) on the dark web unless the company pays a ransom.
According to a company statement, hospital operations aren't affected by the hack, but the personal details of an unspecified number of patients have been taken, including dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, gender and appointment dates.
HCA Healthcare owns several locations in 19 states.
HCA Healthcare stated in the news release that clinical information, treatment, diagnosis, payment information, driver's license and social security numbers were not a part of the hack.
It appears to be a data theft from an external storage location, the news release said.
The investigation is ongoing, and so far, no evidence of malicious activity has been found on HCA Healthcare networks or systems.
Any impacted patients will be contacted by the healthcare group, according to the news release.
Law enforcement has been notified of the hacks, and credit monitoring services will be offered where needed, HCA Healthcare said.
