A Massachusetts man has been accused of trying to open an emergency exit door on a plane mid-flight and then "attempting to stab a flight attendant in the neck" with a broken metal spoon, according tothe U.S. attorney's office in Boston.

Authorities said 33-year-old Francisco Severo Torres, of Leominister, was charged with one count of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon.

He is facing a potential sentence of life in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Lisa Olsen, who lives in Rhode Island, was aboard the United Airlines cross-country flight from Los Angeles to Boston with her 17-year-old daughter on Sunday when she said she heard a commotion.

He was two rows in back of us on the other side of the plane," Olsen told The National Desk in an email Monday night. "He was yelling and saying he was going to kill all the men on the plane and it would be a 'blood bath.' Two of the passengers were trying to calm him down, but he was just getting more upset. One guy started to approach him and that's when he jumped into the aisle and started running toward the front of the plane."

Olsen shared video of the attack, with Torres screaming at the crew and passengers.

"I don't care if I'm scaring you," he said in the footage. "I don't care."

He then ran at flight attendants and tried to stab one of them before passengers tackled him to the ground.

A press release noted that about 45 minutes ahead of landing, the flight crew was alerted that "a starboard side door located between the first class and coach sections of the aircraft was disarmed."

A flight attendant then noticed the door’s locking handle had been moved toward the unlocked position, according to prosecutors, and the emergency slide arming lever was moved to the “disarmed” position.

Prosecutors said another flight attendant said he saw Torres near the door and believed he tampered with it.

A flight attendant then confronted Torres about tampering with the door, to which he allegedly responded by asking if there were cameras showing that he had done so," the release noted. "According to court documents, the flight attendant then notified the captain that they believed Torres posed a threat to the aircraft and that the captain needed to land the aircraft as soon as possible."

That's when Torres then approached two flight attendants and thrusted towards one of them in "a stabbing motion with a broken metal spoon, hitting the flight attendant on the neck area three times."

Passengers then tackled Torres and he was restrained with the assistance of flight crew," prosecutors noted in the release.

Olsen shared similar details.

A bunch of passengers quickly followed him and tackled him to the ground," she said. "They zip-tied his feet and hands, but he broke free from them. He was screaming most of the time. The passengers took turns restraining him until we landed."

The release noted that Torres was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport and appeared before a judge on Monday. A hearing has been set for Thursday.
