CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The motorist who says he was assaulted by state police prior to his arrest in Centre County could be facing even more criminal charges stemming from the high-speed chase that police say happened before he was arrested.
“They're trying to kill me, keeping me locked up.”
Dereck Raimey returned to the Centre County Prison this week after his bail was doubled to $100,000.
The decision followed a hearing in which his attorney is challenging whether state police had probable cause to charge Raimey last December while he was driving on Interstate 80.
According to police, instead of stopping initially, Raimey led them on a lengthy chase before being apprehended.
During the hearing on Tuesday, state police showed up with a new search warrant to obtain a DNA sample from Raimey.
Raimey complied, and police say the search is tied to a gun that was reportedly found about a week after his arrest.
Prosecutors argue that the gun was stolen in Arkansas, and it was discovered by a postman, along one of the rural roads, near Milesburg, that Raimey was on during the chase.
Police say Raimey threw at least one other item out of his vehicle during the chase, and now they’re checking to see if DNA will link him to the gun.
Meanwhile, a decision on the probable cause motion to dismiss the evidence against Raimey isn’t expected until this summer at the earliest.
