JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Pittsburgh-based Primanti Bros. is coming to Johnstown.
Pennswood Commercial Realty, an Altoona-based commercial real estate broker, announced late Monday that a lease has been signed with the regional restaurant chain at the former LoneStar Steakhouse & Saloon on Galleria Drive in Richland Township. The property is owned by BVB Properties in Charlotte, N.C.
Primanti Bros., known for signature sandwiches of grilled meat and french fries, currently has 41 locations including in Altoona and State College.
Cambria Co. officials to unveil new 'safe exchange zones'
CAMBRIA CO, Pa (WJAC) — The Cambria County District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with multiple local police departments, announced the opening of three safe exchange zones in northern Cambria County.
The Cambria County municipal building, the Cambria County courthouse, and the Northern Cambria police building will open on Monday as safe zones.
These safe zones will allow visitors to safely meet for child custody exchanges or online sales.
These Safe Exchange Zones will provide citizens and visitors to our communities the ability to safely meet for child custody exchanges and online-based transaction exchanges in well-lit and video surveilled locations that are easily accessible.
Centre County Sheriff's Department warning of phone scam
BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- The Centre County Sheriff's Department is warning of a new phone scam circulating around the area. Sheriff Bryan Sampsel says thieves are somehow 'spoofing' the department's government phone number, calling people saying there's a warrant out for their arrest.
"In the last two days, we've received several calls, mostly from Penn State employees, saying the Centre County Sheriff's Department is coming to arrest them if they don't provide information to them, bank accounts, saying they need to pay the money,"
Juniata College celebrates back-to-back women's volleyball championships
Huntingdon Co., PA (WJAC) — A local college volleyball team was crowned national champions on Saturday.
Juniata College capped off another year of domination last weekend, winning their second straight D3 women's volleyball championship.
They've played 70 games since 2022 and they've only lost one.
"It seems like a fairytale right now."
Juniata College is making their place as a juggernaut in Division Three women’s volleyball.
The Eagles defeated Hope International three sets to zero in Saturday’s championship match.
New large animal veterinary facility opens in Cambria County
Cambria Veterinary Care hosted a ribbon cutting for their new facility for farm animals Saturday afternoon.
Officials said the clinic will be suited to provide care for animals like horses, cows, pigs and more.
Large animal veterinarian Dr. Aubrey Vena-Erisman said that she returned to her hometown to serve local animals after years of being away.
She said, “I am pumped to be back. I’ve been away from home for almost a decade now and it’s exciting to be back in the area and give back to the community that built me.
Pennsylvania hiker dies on New Hampshire mountain despite life-saving efforts
THOMPSON MESERVE’S PURCHASE, N.H. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man who suffered a medical emergency in the White Mountains of New Hampshire has died despite extensive efforts by rescue crews, authorities said.
Jason Apreku, 21, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, was hiking with friends Friday when he collapsed on Mount Madison, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said in a statement. His friends called for help and began CPR while an Army National Guard helicopter was dispatched from Concord.
Sierra Leone jockey Tyler Gaffalione to possibly face discipline for Kentucky Derby ride
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WKRC) — Sierra Leone jockey Tyler Gaffalione could possibly face disciplinary action for his Kentucky Derby ride. According to WLKY, Gaffalione, who finished second-place in the 150th Kentucky Derby, made contact with another horse during the race. Per the outlet, a film review was ordered following the race on Saturday. The Stewards immediately determined that there were no incidents that altered the 150th's outcome after the race. Per WLKY, due to multiple instances of contact between Sierra Leone and Forever Young, however, the Stewards ordered the review for Gaffalione, despite the official ruling.
Biden official admits some migrants try to 'game' immigration system
WASHINGTON (TND) — Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Thursday some migrants try to manipulate the immigration system.
Mayorkas told CBS News the Biden administration has done an “extraordinary job” of handling increased migration while addressing immigrants exploiting the U.S.’ policies.
“The reality is that some people do indeed try to game the system,” he said. “That does not speak to everyone whom we encounter, but there is an element of it, and we deal with it accordingly.
Hershey Bears Teddy Bear Toss sets New World Record
Hershey, Pa — On Saturday January 22, the Hershey Bears once again established a new world record in one of the best promotions in sports. The Bears, the oldest and most decorated teams in American Hockey League, collected 52,341 teddy bears and stuffed animals during Saturday's Giant Teddy Bear Toss. The pervious world record was 45,765 collected in 2019.
The world-famous event, held during the hockey game versus the Hartford Wolf Pack.
Jerry Sandusky transferred to SCI-Laurel Highlands
SOMERSET - Former Penn State assistant football coach and convicted serial child molester Jerry Sandusky is now serving his sentence in another Somerset County prison.
Susan McNaughton, communications director for the Department of Corrections, confirmed Friday that Sandusky, 73, was moved on Jan. 8 from State Correctional Institution at Somerset to SCI-Laurel Highlands.
“We move inmates throughout our system on a regular basis,” McNaughton said in an email. “This was simply a routine transfer.
