Ridgway police officer plays basketball with kids, buys them slushies
RIDGWAY - Four boys were playing basketball on Sunday when an unexpected player joined them.
"He was driving along the street and he asked if we wanted him to play PIG and we said yes," 8-year-old Joel Neureiter said. "He said whoever wins gets ice cream and then we were playing and having fun," 12-year-old Aaron Hoy said. "The cop won so he said he'll buy everyone ice cream."
That officer was Ridgway Borough Patrolman Corey Wendel.

The 2024 NFL Draft kicked off Thursday night in Detroit with well over 150,000 football fans in attendance.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had the 20th overall selection in the first-round of this year's draft, and selected University of Washington offensive tackle Troy Fautanu.

Man sleeping in dumpster ends up in trash truck
MCKEES ROCK, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a man sleeping in a dumpster was tossed into the back of a garbage truck as the trash was being emptied, causing him to lose his prosthetic leg.
WPXI-TV reports the incident occurred around 2 a.m. Thursday in McKees Rocks. The truck driver heard the man yelling and called 911.
Officials say that while he was in the back of the truck the man realized his prosthetic lower leg was missing.
PA announces new Statewide Opening Day of Trout Season
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — Pennsylvania has a new statewide Opening Day of Trout Season, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced this week.
Starting in 2022, the statewide trout season will open annually on the first Saturday in April.
The PFBC made the decision during their quarterly business meeting Monday in Harrisburg.
The change will offer a longer season to most anglers, said officials, while effectively eliminating the separate regional opening days for Pennsylvania’s 18 southeastern counties.
Rockwood Borough residents build a park to commemorate veterans
Rockwood Borough in Somerset County is home to over 150 active veterans.
That’s why one group has formed the 'Rockwood Veterans and Community Park' committee and decided to revamp an old demolished lot into a community park and veteran’s memorial in order to honor those who served.
Recently, the community donations for the park were matched by Heritage Coal, totaling over 30 thousand dollars. The committee took time to celebrate today over what’s been a plan in the making for the past 6 years and will now come to completion in October 2023.
Air Force pilot in Texas killed in accident, ejection seat activated while on the ground
WICHITA Falls, Texas (KVII) — An Air Force instructor pilot was killed Tuesday morning when their ejection seat activated while on the ground at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls.
Capt. John Robertson, who was part of the 80th Flying Training Wing, was in a T-6A Texan II when the accident occurred.
"This is a devastating loss for Captain Robertson's family and loved ones, and for the entire 80th Flying Training Wing,"
