Blair County, PA — Authorities in Blair County say a man was killed Sunday morning in a logging accident in Altoona.
Officials say 64-year-old Franklin Fink, who was reportedly employed as a harvester for Bonsell Logging, was killed after he was struck by a large tree branch.
Investigators say the incident occurred just before 9 a.m. Sunday along the 1700 block of Riggles Gap Road.
The Blair County coroner's office says Fink was pronounced dead at the scene just before 10 a.
Pittsburgh Zoo elephant gives birth to calf one month early in Somerset County
FAIRHOPE, Pa. - An elephant belonging to the Pittsburgh Zoo gave birth to a calf one month early Wednesday at the zoo's International Conservation Center's Maternal Care Barn in Somerset early Wednesday morning.
Seeni, one of the zoo's three elephants from Botswana, gave birth to a 184-pound calf a month ahead of schedule.
"Seeni wasn't expected to calve until the end of June, so to walk in in the morning and see this tiny little elephant attempting to stand on wobbly legs was a total surprise,"
The first successful open-heart surgery
HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — As part of Black History Month, 6 News is celebrating the life of an African-American man from Blair County who changed medicine forever.
In 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed the first successful open-heart surgery in the world.
He was born in Hollidaysburg in 1856.
Hollidaysburg Mayor Joe Dodson says Dr. Williams followed his father's footsteps and became a barber in Chicago.
Williams eventually worked his way into Chicago medical school, and later opened a hospital in the city.

WASHINGTON (TND) — Two NFL head coaches are weighing in on a controversial speech by one player as it makes waves throughout the league.
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker earned widespread attention last week after delivering a commencement address at Catholic liberal arts school Benedictine College. In the address, the NFL player took aim at policies of President Joe Biden and encouraged women to embrace becoming a “homemaker.”
“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” Butker said to the school’s female graduates.
Fire departments are training for more on the roads
(WJAC) — Tuesday, fire companies in Clearfield County responded to a car on fire. But this wasn’t your typical car. Rather, they say it was a Tesla. Fire departments tell us fighting electric car fires is quite different from regular ones. Are local fire departments ready to handle electric vehicle fires as more of these cars hit the streets?
For those Clearfield firefighters, they say this was one of the first electric vehicle fires they’ve had to deal with.
Giant Heinz ketchup bottle relocated to Heinz museum
Pittsburgh (CNN) — A giant Heinz ketchup bottle was on the move in Pittsburgh on Thursday.
The giant 35-foot ketchup bottle that used to be inside the formerly named Heinz Field is now relocated to the Heinz History Center.
The bottle will sit on the Heinz history's southwest corner, just steps away from the historic Three Rivers Stadium goalposts.
This bottle, and another, previously stood watch atop the end-zone scoreboard at the stadium home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, which has new naming rights.
Man killed in construction zone crash that closed Mifflin Co. roadway
2nd UPDATE |Mifflin County, PA (WJAC) — State police say a 57-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a construction zone crash along Route 522 in Mifflin County.
Troopers identified the victim as Dwayne Grove.
Police say a 54-year-old man was also injured in the crash.
The incident closed a stretch of Route 522, from the Mifflin County/Huntingdon County line to Jacks Mountain Road, for several hours.
Troopers say no further details are being released at this time and PSP Lewistown is continuing to investigate the crash.
Online child exploitation reports increased in 2023. How some are working to prevent it
WASHINGTON (TND) — According to The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, last year there were over 36 million reports of child online exploitation made to its Cyber Tipline; an increase of 12%. Now, experts are sounding the alarm, saying something needs to be done to help bring those numbers down. But some believe evolving technology is making that harder to do.

Pennsylvania university shooting wounds 2 women
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (AP) — Two women were wounded by a gunshot during a spring event at a university in southeastern Pennsylvania over the weekend, authorities said.
Lincoln University security officials said the shooting happened at about 10 p.m. Saturday during “Yardfest,” an annual spring event at the Chester County campus near Oxford that prosecutors said was attended by several thousand people. University officials said neither victim was a Lincoln student.
Huntingdon man charged after attempting to burn down woman's home with her inside
Huntingdon Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Huntingdon County say an 83-year-old man is facing several felonies, accused of attempting to burn down a woman's home Monday morning with her still inside it.
According to a criminal complaint, Gary Harbst, of Huntingdon, faces numerous charges including attempted homicide, arson, aggravated assault and risking catastrophe.
Troopers say just before 8 a.m. Monday, Harbst reportedly drove his UTV from his residence along John Bum Road to the victim's home, located along the 7300 block of Fosters Road in Union Township.
